After looking over my WEC 36 predictions, I am super excited for this upcoming card. WEC 36 is finally on our doorstep! It will take place this upcoming Wednesday, November 5th. If you are an MMA fan of any kind, you should definitely tune in to see some of the best fighters in the world throwing around their martial arts equipment.
WEC 36 can be seen for free on Spike TV and has one of the most consistent, exciting cards in MMA right now. The WEC Featherweight champion, and one of the best fighters on the planet, Urijah Faber, will be in action against Mike Brown. In addition to the Faber fight, there are several other interesting pieces to WEC 36. Here are 4 storylines to watch for at WEC 36.
1. Can anyone beat Urijah Faber?
The WEC Featherweight champion has looked indestructable in his reign as the 145 lb. king. He has steamrolled all opponents, with his stiffest test coming in his last fight against Feathweight legend, Jens Pulver. Faber earned a hard fought, yet desicive decision against the former UFC champion.
Faber will be facing a very game Mike Brown. Brown is coming off of a big win over Jeff Curran, and is riding a 7 fight win streak. He will try to implement his submission game against Faber’s exceptional wrestling and cardio. Brown is a longshot to win, but he is in most peoples’ minds the 2nd best Featherweight on the planet right now.
2. Pulver vs. Garcia…old guard versus new blood.
Keeping on the topic of WEC Featherweights, the fight between Jens Pulver and Leonard Garcia is likely going to give Faber his next opponent. If Pulver wins, there will be a much anticipated rematch with Faber. If Garcia wins, we will see him and Faber for the first time.
Jens Pulver is 1-1 in the WEC’s 145 lb. division with a embarrassing submission of Cub Swanson and a decision loss to Urijah Faber. Pulver is a cagey veteran of the fight game who has great wrestling and boxing to go along with an underrated submission game.
Garcia is a young, scrappy, heavy handed submission specialist who will be looking to prevail in this classic battle of young versus old. He is coming off a shocking KO victory of highly ranked Hiroyuki Takaya, and will be looking to do the same to the Miletich product.
3. Submission artist against submission defense.
The Rob McCullough Don Cerrone fight is another intriguing matchup on the WEC 36 card. “Razor” Rob looked to be unbeatable as the WEC Lightweight champion, but his subsequent loss to Jamie Varner and lackluster win against Kenneth Alexander left all of us yearning for the old Rob McCullough.
He will have his work cut out for him against Greg Jackson product, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. Cerrone is 8-0 with 8 submission victories. He would be 9-0, but his submission win over Kenneth Alexander was called a no contest after Cerrone tested positive for a banned substance.\
Cerrone has submitted every opponent, and McCullough has never been submitted. Both of these guys have very competent stand up, so this fight should be very, very close.
4. Was Filho a fluke?
The WEC Middleweight champion has been a disappointment thus far in the WEC although he is 2-0. He was losing his last fight against Chael Sonnen before the fight was controversally stopped because of a Filho armbar.
Filho has since entered a rehab program to treat chemical dependency and depression, and is coming back clean, sober and ready. He is facing a very game Chael Sonnen once again in a hotly anticipated rematch. Sonnen made his case heard after a destruction of Bryan Baker in his last fight.
Expect both of these guys to enter the cage with their martial arts uniforms on and ready to go. If Filho beats Sonnen decisively, he will solidify himself as one of the top Middleweights in the world. If Sonnen wins, there might be a rubber match on the horizon.
